getting started on weigh in wednesday…

By monica • January 13th, 2010

Thanks for joining me on this Weigh in Wednesday. One of the first questions people ask me about losing weight is how do I get started?

Rather than start the latest fad diet or get out the food scales (right this moment) you must first understand that ……in order to Right Size Your Life and lose some weight you must first –get rid of the garbage “lies” that are in your head.

For example there are many myths about being thin or thinner. One of them is that all thin people are healthy. They are not. You can be thin and fit – you can also be thin and have an eating disorder. You can also be overweight and still be healthy.

So as you get started on this weight loss journey – we must change our thinking. We must learn to think the “right or right sizing kind of thoughts”.

So on this weigh in Wednesday we will focus on Clearing the Clutter (the obstacles out of your way).

The first obstacle is usually how we think and view ourselves. Let’s first start by renewing our mind.

Renew your Mind in the Truth

Romans 12:2 NLT

2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

In order to Right Size anything (including losing weight) your thought life has got to be Right Sized first. Do you think any of the following thoughts listed below?

I’m Fat

I’m Worthless

I can never lose weight

I’m a glutton

It’s in my DNA

I can’t lose weight

I can’t stop eating

I don’t have time

I have to starve to lose weight !!

Slow metabolism

Everything I eat goes to my hips……

It’s because I’m older

It’s because I am a woman

The above and similar thoughts will prohibit you from making positive right sized changes. Renew your mind in God’s truth. The Right Sizing Your Life book and audio book are filled with scriptures to help you renew your mind. If you don’t have the book yet – just open up your bible and see how God wants you to think about your life. As you start Right Sizing your thought life…it will be easier to make healthier choices and start losing weight.

Looks at some of the things that God says to you in His Word.

God says we can do all things through Christ.

God says we are More than conquerors through Christ Jesus

God says we are Heirs and Joint Heirs

God says He didn’t leave us here as orphans that His Holy Spirit will help us.

God says the same spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwells in us……..

Instead of starting this weight loss journey with the same old methods from the past. Start praying about your thought life right now. Ask God to help you in this journey. When negative thoughts about past failed attempts – the amount of weight you have to lose…..start to occur – renew your mind right then and there.

Realize that it’s easier to run a race if the obstacles are out of the way. The biggest obstacle is your thought life. Renew and train your mind to know that you can Right Size your Life. This is your starting point.

We will take about another step next week. Please share any comments or questions in your weight loss journey. I am happy to help and will be praying for you.

Shalom,

monica

I have been trying to lose weight and get toned since January 2010. My daughter and I decided to buddy up and walk daily. She’s 39 and I’m 62. We worked around her schedule (she’s a nurse) so that we were walking about 45 minutes three times a week. Well, we walked and walked all thru january, february, march and april. She lost 7 pounds and i lost none. We did feel healthier because we could breathe better. We did not really modify our eating habits, and that’s probably why we failed, but I feel that I should have at least lost one pound a month!
Needless to say, I have given up. I needed to lose abut 30 pounds.
I just wonder if God is really interested in our everyday life. I hear people (preachers, christian motivational speakers) constantly talk about how God doesn’t care how large or small our problems/concerns are, He is ready to help in ANYTHING. That doesn’t seem to be what I have experienced.I did better when I didn’t ask for His help.
Maybe He just expects us to use common sense (less food intake and more activity) and stop asking for help in something we already know how to do? Just a thought.

as far God caring about every detail in our lives…i believe scripture supports that. He says in Matthew that He’s got the number of hairs on our head counted and that not a sparrow falls with His knowledge. clearly, He’s communicating His love for mankind and creatures and His care about our daily details.

at the same time while He cares about every detail of our lives He also expects us to use common sense in our everyday lives. after all He is the one that put a brain in our head. this includes making good decisions in the area of weight loss, food portions and exercise.

here’s where prayer comes in about “common sense” issues (…sometimes just knowledge about a subject is not enough. let’s use the weight loss (less food more activity example)– pretty much that’s a simple math equation. most people have the knowledge that in order to lose weight we must eat less and exercise more. but few people succeed in this arena.
why is that? in very simple terms it’s because “knowledge” all by itself doesn’t always equal transformation. transformation requires knowledge but also requires the power to change. God gives us the power to change.

when we use the brain the God placed in our head…and also pray to Him for the power to make changes we have dramatically increased our capacity for success.
so yes - God cares about every area in our life (sometimes it doesn’t feel or seem that way) but He does care. He loves you unconditionally and lavishly i promise you that. and yes, He wants all of us to use common sense. and then yes again, He tells us to pray to Him for wisdom, strength etc. so that we can have the power to make needed change in our lives.

i understand that you feel like you did better when you didn’t ask for His help…..i understand that sometimes it feels like He’s not concerned with every single detail of our life. but the truth is He is concerned - He does care. our prayers do not always equal immediate answers. but there is something to be said about consistency both in the spiritual and in the physical.
i am praying for you to feel the Love of our Lord and His presence in your daily life. when it comes to weight loss - it’s a long haul for sure. btw i agree that you should have lost at least a pound a week and i am sorry that you didn’t.
i struggle my entire life with various weight issues. it’s not easy. the more i included God the more i got His help over time. sure i had my ups and downs - we all do. i am praying for you. stick with it. ask and expect His help. He loves you !!

monica

Thank you for your supportive answers..!

I think I was taking literally what the Word says about having faith in God and His grace being sufficient. I understood it to be unmerited favor?
I know that it’s more than enough that He redeemed us. I think I will just be grateful for that and let the other things go since I am confused about what God can and can’t do in our lives.
Thank you again.
